The Portage model aims to do the following:

bullet To intervene in the early years of the life of the child with developmental disabilities.
bullet To help families that receive minimal or no other services in the community.
bullet To carry out multi-disciplinary evaluations and handle children who are at risk in developing developmental disorders.
bullet To maintain and preserve the skills that the child already possesses.
bullet To encourage the development and advancement of new skills.
bullet To enrich the child's and family's quality of life.
bullet To train parents how to educate their children according to the child's needs and requirements and to encourage active participation from the parents.
