Developmental disorders are confronted and handled better when intervention occurs at an early stage in the child's life. When the disability is detected early on, one may prevent it from getting worse by applying different methods and techniques that are adopted according to the child's and the family's needs, abilities and difficulties. This is the philosophy that guides the Portage Home-Visitation Model, hence Portage is an Early Intervention service.
The Portage model is directed to preschool aged children (0-6 years) suffering from developmental disorders. Portage offers help to the child through the parents, with the guidance of specially trained staff (Home-Visitors). It covers 5 basic areas in development, such as: language, cognition, motor-skills, socialisation and self-help.
