9TH INTERNATIONAL PORTAGE ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE


FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT

 

Dear Participants,

We are only a few weeks away from the Conference.  Please find below some additional final information, which we hope you will find useful during  your arrival and will help you enjoy your stay in Cyprus.

a)  General Information

English is the second language, after Greek,  and is widely spoken.  A greater knowledge of French and German is increasingly noticeable.

The currency of the Republic is the Cyprus Pound (CY£), which is divided into 100 cents.  It is equivalent to US$ 1.70 or 1.73 Euro.  Notes are issued in £20, £10, £5 and £1 denominations.  Coins of 1, 2, 5,10 and 50 cents are in circulation.

Banks in Cyprus open for the public from 08.30 to 12.30 midday.  Certain banks in tourist areas open during the afternoon.  Automatic Exchange Machines operate on a 24hour basis.  Most currencies and denominations are accepted.

All recognised credit cards are accepted in Cyprus.

The voltage on the island is 240.  Socket outlets are flat 3 pin-type.

Telephone:  Cyprus automatic telephone dialing system reaches 206 countries.  Telecards can be purchased from Post Offices, kiosks and souvenir shops.

b)  Entry To The Island

There are two international airports in Cyprus, at Larnaca and Paphos.  Most international flights arrive in Larnaca.

Cyprus Airways is the island’s national carrier and the Conference’s official carrier.

Participants are advised to arrange to arrive in Paphos.  If this is not possible, they will have to get a taxi from Larnaca airport (150 meters straight ahead from the arrivals exit of the airport building) to Paphos and the Coral Beach.

    The cost is about CP£40-45.  If you share it with some other participants it will be a cheap, quick and convenient transfer.  The distance from Larnaca to Paphos is 150 km (2 hours).

Visas:  No visas are required for entry into Cyprus by nationals of most countries.

Vaccinations:  Not required.

 

c)  Climate

The climate is equable, with an abundance of sunny days throughout the year.

bullet

The average daytime temperature for November is 22 degrees Cº.

bullet

Jackets and light sweaters are recommended for November.  Warm clothes may be required for the evening.

 

d)  Shopping Hours

November to March 08 – 18.00 (Friday 08.00 – 19.00)

bullet

Shops are closed all day Sunday and on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.  In some tourist areas they are also open on Sundays.

 

e)  Conference Information

There is a Bank in the arrivals hall of the airport for those of the participants who would like to change money upon arrival.

Please inform us on your arrival and departure date, time and flight if you have not done so.

bullet

The speakers are requested to send their 250 words C.V. as soon as possible.

bullet

Those of the participants who are joining the excursion (free except lunch) on Sunday  the 10th of November, are advised to inform the Organising Committee.  The Committee cannot secure a place for those who will not register.

Participants are reminded that all meals, including the reception of the 7th, the dinner at the tavern on the 8th and the gala dinner of the 9th, as well as coffee breaks are covered by the Registration Fee.
